Indonesia Currency

Indonesian Currency

The rupiah (Rp) is the official currency of Indonesia. Issued and controlled by the Bank of Indonesia, the currency code for the Indonesian rupiah is IDR. The symbol used on all banknotes and coins are Rp. The name derives from Indian the monetary unit rupee. Informally, Indonesians also use the word "perak" ('silver' in Indonesian) in referring to rupiah. The rupiah is subdivided into 100 sen, although inflation has rendered all coins and banknotes denominated in sen obsolete.

The first rupiah was introduced in 1945. During the Indonesian War of Independence (1945-1949), the rupiah circulated alongside the Netherlands Indies gulden (including issues of the Japanese government, the Javanese Bank (Java rupiah) and the Dutch Government (NICA gulden)) and theNetherlands Indies rupee, which had also been issued by the Japanese government. By the end of 1949, the Republic's rupiah had replaced the other currencies throughout Indonesia.

Indonesian currency is rupiah. It is influenced by the name of the Indian rupee? We do not know exactly. It was long time ago Indonesian people and culture and Hindus. The reason is that even up no nowadays many Indonesian names and terminologies are Indians such as, Madura, Sri, Wisnu, Yudha, Atma, etc.

The following is very simple history of our country. First, during the Dutch colonization, Indonesia well-known as the Netherlands Indian used guilder, the Dutch currency, and its small change, cent. They were cast on gold, silver, and brass. Then, it seems that when the Japanese Colonized Indonesia, rupiah was firstly used by Dai Nippon Teikoku Seihu, and they still used cent for small change. They were printed on paper. At last rupiah has been used since the early of the Republic Indonesian. Indonesian sent it was cast on some kinds of metals, aluminium, nickel, and brass and was used until 1968. The values were half a sen, on sen, two and half sends, five sens, ten sens, twenty five sens, and fifty sens. Before the end of the president soekarno’s area, one sen, five sens, twenty five sens and fifty sens were printed on paper. Until about 1967 the highest value of our currency was Rp100. as sen disappear in 1968, the smallest value which has printed on paper was Rp1 the highest was rp1000. Today the longest dgital currency in the world is rupiah, Rp100, 000. How high the value of our currency at that time was. Today if we talk about our salary or other income, tax and other expenses, we must used the words of millions, billions even trillions of rupiahs, the words that were never long time ago.
